I visited Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral yesterday for the first time. We lived fairly near Liverpool for 4 years but only went to the Anglican Cathedral for some reason (it may have been the draw of the SPCK bookshop or the café).
I had a very powerful spiritual response to the inside of the Cathedral which is both modern and majestic and I began to reflect with the friends who were with me on the ability of something which is visual to draw you closer to God. We may find this all the time as we look at things seen within nature, but I don't remember feeling so strongly about a building.
I just wanted to remain in God's presence, to spend time drinking in what was before me as I felt a very real sense of being enveloped by him but also nudged by his saints who had toiled so faithfully to create such an amazing place of worship.
Almost as though they were reminding me that God only deserves the very best that we can offer.
